Question: What have you published recently?

My first novel A Love Beyond Time was published in July.

Question: How, and when, did you decide to become a writer?

I can’t quite tell you why I started writing.  One day the idea for a story just popped into my head and I found I had to write it, that was over a decade ago.  I haven’t ever finished that story.  I think my writing skills at the time were not up to the task of bringing that story to life.  Some day soon I will get back to that story and finish it.

Question: Where can we find your published writing?

A Love Beyond Time is available on Amazon.

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?

I have a full time job so typically I can only get a few hours in the evening to do any writing.  I am an organic writer, so I tend to have moments where inspiration hits and I’m off writing, the pen moving as fast as I can move it across the page.  Typically I spend most of my time writing in one notebook or another.  When those notes have piled up for a while I will spend some of my time inputting them into the computer.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them

My favorite characters would have to be the Eva’s.  For those of you that have not read my first book that would be Elena, Veronica and Ashley.  The three of them are best friends and roommates.  Elena is more of a quite person with an athletic streak.  She does have a fiery temper though.  Veronica is the oldest of the three, but by far is the least mature.  She has all of the assets and tends to use them quite often.  Ashley is more of a middle of the road woman.  She is not as quiet as Elena, but she is not as boisterous as Veronica.  She has her life irrevocably changed by an event.  You will have to read to find out what that event is.

These characters are where I am spending most of my time right now, so for now they are my favorites.

Question: do you find you “mentally edit” other writers’ works as you read them? Does doing this help you or bother you?

Yes I do find myself mentally editing other writers.  When I was just starting to become a serious writer this was very annoying.  I would be just getting into a story and a mistake made by the writer would stop me in my tracks.  Now I find those moments informative.  I try to learn from what other writers have done to help make my writing better.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?

While I am in the process of writing something I do not listen to music.  I am too engaged with what is going down onto the page to pay attention to anything else.  I personally prefer to write everything out initially in a notebook and then type it or transcribe it by voice into the computer.  When I do editing or rewriting on the computer I do listen to music.  Sometimes I will listen to a particular song over and over while doing this work to breath what I feel from that song into the words.  A primary example of this would be the song Lost in Paradise by Evanescence.  It helped breath life into one particular chapter of A Love Beyond Time.

Question: What do you eat while writing?

I don’t eat while writing.  I tend not to have a free hand, notebook in one hand, pen in the other.

Five for Fun:

What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?

What is your favourite cartoon character?

Simon the digger from Gurren Lagann

What is your favourite movie of all time?

Ok this is an absolutely impossible question to answer.  I am a bit of a movie buff so I tend to watch a lot of movies.  In all the years I have never found one that is my absolute favorite.  I don’t know if I ever will.

What do you like to do for fun or just to relax?

Read or watch a movie.
