Jennifer Howard's "The Healing Heart" is a love story. It's the tale of Jamie Hansen, a widow who two years ago lost her beloved husband, and a month ago lost her father. Now she's trying to hold the rest of her family - her 14-year-old daughter, and her mother - together as best she can.

At a tribute to her father, Jamie literally runs into Conley Michaels, a handsome real-estate executive who definitely seems to have eyes for her. That first meeting may blossom into a full-fledged romance - if Jamie can convince herself to let it.

The story is told in first person, from Jamie's perspective. She's an incredibly likeable and engaging narrator, and the author does a wonderful job capturing her voice, as well as developing all the other people that inhabit Jamie's world.

It's a very straightforward story; the biggest obstacles Jamie faces in her journey are her own nerves and doubts, which are very believable. She's still recovering from the loss of her husband, and she's not sure whether she can love again, or if she should.

The prose is breezy and easy to read, and it's impossible not to like and root for Jamie as she finds herself falling for Conley and trying to figure out what to do about it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I recommend it wholeheartedly; I look forward to reading more from Jennifer Howard in the future.

I'm asked frequently to read other authors' books and give a review, but I mostly pass due to time restraints. When Jennifer emailed me on Goodreads and asked if I'd read and review, I reluctantly agreed. Why? I couldn't tell you. I don't even like love stories. But here's the thing. I'm so glad I did.

A very well written and lovely story of Jamie, a woman who has suffered more loss than most of us, but meets it head on with faith, grace, and strength. A strength she passes down to her daughter. She'd been blessed with her one-of-a-kind fairytale husband, but for reasons known only to God, he was taken from her. Jamie moved on with her life as a single mother, and did well with it. She settled her mind knowing that she'd lived the life of a love so few find and she was truly grateful for that. Now, she would find her joy and happiness from raising her daughter and best friend. But when fate presents Jamie with a handsome and charming male pursuer, it becomes clear that fate is smiling on Jamie once again, and she's smart enough to go with it, and brave enough to give her heart yet another chance at happiness.

I truly enjoyed this beautiful story written by a fine author. I look forward to more from her.

What a wonderfully sweet, funny story! It was so well written and the main characters were endearing! Great job Jennifer! I look forward to more books from this author! She has a sweet, fun style that had me smiling A LOT!!

Jennifer Howard's "The Steps to Karma" is a romantic, heartfelt fantasy. Not fantasy as in swords, spells, elves and all that. Fantasy as in, the fantasy we've all had at one time or another of quitting a stressful, soul-killing job, leaving behind all our angst and baggage and starting a simpler, far happier life in a tropical paradise.

As the story opens, high-powered and hard-living divorce attorney Karma Clark does exactly that, leaving her job and the rat race of Washington, DC behind for a new life in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Can she fit into this new world, find a place among the tight-knit island community, and really shut the door on all the things she hoped to leave behind? You'll have to read to find out!

Like her previous novel, "The Healing Heart", the author gives us a sympathetic and rootable - but also believable and humanly-flawed - heroine. The story is told in first person, from Karma's POV, and the author captures her voice very nicely. The supporting characters are interesting and also very human, and the author does an especially good job evoking the feel of the USVI (not that I've ever been there, but I feel like I've been after reading this) and the pace of island life.

It's a fun, funny and heartwarming book, and I definitely recommend it!

Let me start by saying I am not a huge fan of Contemporary Romance, or a book told in first person format. This book is both. However, this one really worked for me. The concept was so original, I couldn't wait to see how it played out. Imagine walking away from your entire life. Everything you have worked for. Just chuck it all and move away. There was a little to much detail in the first few chapters, but then it started to flow and I could not stop reading!! I really enjoyed the storyline between Karma and Jae, and between Karma and Will. And the ending was perfection. 5 Stars!!!

What an absolutely sweet and soulful story. This story was so fun to read. I loved the 'beachy' atmosphere (especially since I haven't been in a while). What a great story having a perfect ending. One thing in particular I enjoyed was how perfectly the accents were written as well as the French phrases! Yea, and amongst the other things I enjoyed was the length of the book! It was PERFECT. Not too long and not to short! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more!
