Interview with Jody A Kessler By Aoife Marie Sheridan

Question: What have you published recently?

Death Lies Between Us is my debut novel, released from Crescent Moon Press in March of 2013. It is a New Adult Paranormal Romance about a discontented Angel of Death who risks his eternal soul to save the life of his newest client instead of escorting her to the afterlife.

This is the first book in the An Angel Falls series.

Question: How, and when, did you decide to become a writer?

Writing is something that I was born with. Although I didn’t realize it until I was in my early thirties. It was after I returned to the craft and started writing novels that everything seemed to click into place. I began to remember how much time I spent writing as a child and into my teens. It is hard to believe that I pretty much stopped writing all through my twenties. Writing is the most natural thing I have ever done and has brought a completely serendipitous feeling to my daily life.

Question: Where can we find your published writing?

All major online booksellers. Here are a few links Amazon   Barnes and Noble   All Romance Ebooks

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?

I mostly participate in “normal” life stuff. I’m a mom and a wife. I also teach yoga — which I love.   I have very little uninterrupted time to write so I try to take advantage of it at any given opportunity. I’ve even trained myself to read and edit my manuscript outside while my son plays in the yard.  Sitting on a rock or in the pine needles to get one more page completed is a common site around our house.

When I am writing, I like to write in 2-3 hour shifts. This seems to be the most time I ever get before some interruption makes me stop working, or it is so late at night that I can’t stop yawning. And, like many authors, I spend a lot of my time on social networks, especially Facebook and Twitter.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them

Chris Abeyta, the ghost hunter and shaman, is a definitely a favorite. He’s wise and thoughtful, but extremely temperamental and has a hard time being around people. He tends to be very serious, but every once in a while he relaxes and let’s his sense of humor shine through. Chris gets to practice Native American ceremonies and rituals and hunts ghosts. He has been a really entertaining and fun character to write. Juliana Crowson, one of my two MC’s, is another favourite. She is quirky, intelligent, and superstitious. How she handles her emotions keeps the story rolling because she likes to put other people’s safety and wellbeing before her own.

Question: do you find you “mentally edit” other writers’ works as you read them? Does doing this help you or bother you?

I catch myself doing this all the time. Editing other authors work definitely helps me with my own writing, but it also bothers me. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time to the days when I could just enjoy the story and I had no concerns about how to craft a novel.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?

Indie Alternative. My latest favorites have been The Twilight Sad, Sigur Ros, The National, and Beach House. I love music, maybe even more than books. And then there are times when I have to have complete quiet while I work.

Question: What do you eat while writing?

I like to have something hot to sip on when I write. Coffee, black tea, or herbal tea. Sometimes hot chocolate.  I’ll drink any of them. Eating happens before or after writing.

Five for Fun:

What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?

Dark roast coffee with cream and sugar is a favorite, but I also really like black tea with cream and sugar.

What is your favourite cartoon character?

Shaun the sheep. I stumbled across these claymation shorts on the TV one day and instantly fell in love with them. My family and I watch the DVD’s of Shaun the Sheep all the time.

What is your favourite movie of all time?

I have two — Immortal Beloved and Harold and Maude.

What do you like to do for fun or just to relax?

I love to hike and swim. Spending time outdoors relaxes me more than almost anything else.
