Interview with Author Shari Sakurai by Aoife Marie Sheridan

Book title: Perfect World

1.       Tell us a little about your book.

Perfect World is predominately a science fiction novel set in future London in the year 2115, but also features a romance between the protagonist and antagonist. Eric Rawlins (the protagonist), is a genetically engineered superhero who works for the London Security Agency (L.S.A) which is the organisation that created him. The antagonist, Adam Larimore, was also genetically engineered and has a genius level IQ and longevity. As the novel progresses Eric begins to see a darker side to the organisation that he works for and also learns that Adam isn’t quite the villain that he’s made out to be. They become closer throughout the novel but Eric remains unsure of whether he can trust Adam or if he is being used.

2.       How did you come up with the title?

One the themes in the novel is that the L.S.A and Government believe that they have created a much better world from the ashes of the old one, but in reality with the rich and powerful controlling everything things are much worse for everyday people. They feel that they have created a Perfect World, but only for themselves.

3.       What inspired you to write this book?

It came to me quite out of the blue really. But it was one of those ideas that as soon as I’d had it I had to stop what I was doing and immediately write it down!

4.       Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

That science and technology cannot be used to fix all of the problems with the world today and in the future.

5.       Do you have a favorite line or scene from your latest release?

My favourite scene is when Eric and Adam spend some time together away from the city. It shows how they really start to form a meaningful connection with each other.

6.       Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I was about six years old at the time and my class was writing a story together about the teacher’s pet rat! I really enjoyed writing my scene for the book and I’ve been writing ever since!

7.       Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I have several but the one who comes to mind first is James Clemens. I love his writing style and the worlds that he creates.

8.       What’s next for you? / What is your next project?

I’m currently working on a follow up to Perfect World as well as the sequel to my first novel, Demon’s Blood.

9.       Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you so much for reading my novels. It really means a lot to me that you’re reading and enjoying what I have written. Thank you!
