Interview with Author Stacie Simpson by Aoife Marie Sheridan

Question: What have you published recently?

Answer: Most recently I published Destined for Time, the second book in the Myths and Legends series.
Question: How, and when, did you decide to become a writer?

Answer: I always enjoyed writing assignments when I was in school but I never really thought about writing for any other reason. Then early in 2011 my life took a dramatic turn that I like to think of as starting a new book, rather than a new chapter. The beginning of that book was very dark and during that time I actually wrote quite a few poems. Even though the poems were more about expressing my emotional turmoil Max, the man I share my life with, loved each and every one of them and encouraged me to continue writing. Then in June of 2012 I was inspired by one of my favorite authors, Ilona Andrews, while browsing her website. I liked the idea of a husband and wife writing team and I asked Max if he wanted to write a book with me. He said he’d give it a shot but in the end I wound up doing all the writing. Max was however a good sounding board for my ideas and we always enjoy discussing my characters and storylines together.

Question: Where can we find your published writing?

Answer: My books are self published through Smashwords, Kindle Direct Publishing and CreateSpace and are currently only available through online retailers including, but not limited to:
Apple iBookstore

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?

Answer: Basically I have to squeeze writing in whenever I can. It isn't always easy but I try to write whenever and wherever inspiration strikes - on my lunch hour at work, waiting in line at the movies, sitting on the couch while Max watches TV (much easier to do during sports than nighttime talk shows)... Since I do all of my writing on my iPad (or my iPhone in a pinch) using the Pages app my options are almost limitless. On top of writing, I also try to spend a little time each day interacting with other authors and readers through websites like Goodreads and social media like Twitter and Facebook. When I come to the end of a book I have to spend sometime in front of my PC for editing and formatting, but I really try to avoid that until the last minute. I spend forty hours a week in front of a computer doing work, when I write I much prefer to lay back in bed or recline on my couch.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them.

Answer: I would say Rook, the male protagonist from my second book Destined for Time is my favorite character. He's six-six with lean muscles, straight ebony hair falling to his waist and likes to wear black leather pants and body hugging long sleeved shirts. To the human world his name is Devin Delaney, and he's the head of security at the Myths and Legends Casino Resort. To the supernatural community he's Rook, a time demon and Guardian of the Dragon King.
As a Guardian, Rook was trained from birth to protect his charge using any means necessary. He has a strong sense of purpose and an even stronger belief in justice. He's watchful, dangerous, and doesn't miss a thing. When the situation calls for it he's not opposed to torture and he wouldn't hesitate to remove any threat to the well-being of the people he protects and cares about.
Although he's mostly a very serious individual who shoulders his great responsibilities in stride he occasionally sets time back just to see a humorous event happen again. He also likes to ride his Ducati motorcycle, swim in the Gulf and listen to classic rock music.

My second favorite character would have to be Claire, resident psychic at Myths and Legends. She's five-six with long, curly, black hair and likes to dress like a fortune teller or a gypsy with flowing skirts, off-the-shoulder peasant blouses and colorful scarves. When she looks into the future she sees hundreds of visions that may only affect one or two people, but every now and then her visions are accompanied by tears of gold. Those visions are known as Golden Prophecies and could potentially change the world, and every world connected to it.
Mostly she spends her time making cryptic statements designed to move people around like pieces on a chessboard in an effort to either create or avoid whatever futures she's seen in her visions. Her way of doing things often brings her head to head with the Dragon King himself, but not even he is a match for Claire and her determination. She plays a motherly role for the people at Myths and Legends and often shows up just in time with a much needed item such as a wedding dress or the location of a winning lottery ticket.

Question: do you find you “mentally edit” other writers’ works as you read them? Does doing this help you or bother you?

Answer: I wouldn't say I mentally edit while I read others'works but since I've started writing myself I do pay more attention to writing styles. Sometimes it takes away from the story, but mostly I think it makes the stories more enjoyable.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?

Answer: I honestly don't listen to music while I write. When I'm home alone I turn off all the TVs and enjoy the peace and quiet. Otherwise I write with whatever is playing on the TV in the background.
Question: What do you eat while writing?

Answer: I try really hard not to eat while I write because I've put on a few pounds since I started writing. But when I have them in the house, I've found that I really like to eat Twizzlers while I write.
Five for Fun:
What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?
My favorite non-alcoholic drink is Diet Pepsi.
What is your favourite cartoon character?
My favorite cartoon character is Disney's Mulan because she uses brains to beat out brawn, she never gives up no matter how badly the cards are stacked against her, and she proves that not all women need men to protect them.
What is your favourite movie of all time?
The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite movie of all time.
What do you like to do for fun or just to relax?
I like to read, watch action movies and play fantasy football.
